For the Purpose of Economics, 2026 | indigo, acrylic, denim
In these works on bleached denim, I turn indigo powder into paint. I then apply the wet pigment to my body and engage in a series of actions, thrusting myself onto the durable cloth. Each repetitive gesture of force that I make functions as a movement practice, a somatic approach to processing grief, connecting the histories of the materials to the experiences of the black female body through time and space. It is also an investigation of the materiality and possibilities of color through pressing, shifting side to side, and rolling. Each move leaves ghost-like strokes and abstract imagery weaving narratives across past, present, and future.
